Here is some of what I have suggested:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong>(1)<\/strong><\/span> I believe that breath meditation is the best place for people to start a regular meditation practice; it is the most basic, foundational, beginner meditation practice. Here are some <a href=\"https:\/\/intromeditation.com\/Wordpress\/breath\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">breath meditation instructions for beginners.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-3447\" src=\"https:\/\/intromeditation.com\/Wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/304299_362410453836906_253390753_n-300x236.jpg\" alt=\"304299_362410453836906_253390753_n\" width=\"360\" height=\"283\" srcset=\"https:\/\/intromeditation.com\/Wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/304299_362410453836906_253390753_n-300x236.jpg 300w, https:\/\/intromeditation.com\/Wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/304299_362410453836906_253390753_n.jpg 720w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 360px) 100vw, 360px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong>(2)<\/strong><\/span> After some experience with meditating on the breath, meditation on body sensations is an usual second step for mindfulness meditators. The <a href=\"https:\/\/intromeditation.com\/Wordpress\/body-scan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">&#8220;Body Scan&#8221;\/&#8221;Body Sweep&#8221; technique<\/a> is one of the most popular mindfulness meditation techniques in the world, and <a href=\"https:\/\/intromeditation.com\/Wordpress\/label-body\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">&#8220;Labeling Body Sensations&#8221;<\/a> is my favorite meditation technique that I have done pretty much every day for three decades.\u00a0 And <a href=\"https:\/\/intromeditation.com\/Wordpress\/overview-of-body-meditation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here is a short overview<\/a> of different techniques of body meditation, and their value.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #993300;\">(3)<\/span><\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/insighttimer.com\/adamcoutts\/guided-meditations\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The guided meditations that I have posted to Insight Timer<\/a> &#8211; Self-Friendliness, Finding a Solid Meditation Posture, and relaxing Forest Waterfall Visualization &#8211; are all great for beginners.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #993300;\">(3)<\/span><\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/intromeditation.com\/Wordpress\/working-out\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">This blog post<\/a> helps people to understand meditation practice by seeing it as similar to the habit of physical exercise and working out, which is something that more people are more familiar with and able to understand.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong>(4)<\/strong><\/span> If you plan to start an actual personal practice soon, then I recommend reading\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/intromeditation.com\/Wordpress\/what-time-of-day-to-meditate-and-for-how-long\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">this post about what time of day to sit, and for how #993300;\">(12)<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0A\u00a0book that I cannot recommend strongly enough to beginners is: <a href=\"https:\/\/intromeditation.com\/Wordpress\/book-report-mindfulness-in-plain-english-by-bhante-henepola-gunaratana\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">&#8220;Mindfulness In Plain English&#8221;<\/a>. I love this book, I find it to be clear, simple, and powerful description of the basics of mindfulness meditation, easy to read yet comprehensively covers the important areas. The author, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Henepola_Gunaratana\">Bhante Henepola Gunaratana<\/a>, has,\u00a0as an act of generosity, allowed his book to be <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=%22mindfulness+in+plain+english%22\">posted online at various sites for free<\/a>\u00a0(you can, of course, also give back and order a paper copy).<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong>(13)<\/strong><\/span> My main meditation\/spiritual teacher Shinzen Young has written and posted some insightful, comprehensive, clear, and otherwise excellent overview articles about the meditative path: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shinzen.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/WhatIsMindfulness_SY_Public_ver1.5.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">What Is Mindfulness<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shinzen.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/FiveWaystoKnowYourself_ver1.6.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">an introduction to his mindfulness system<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shinzen.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/SeeHearFeelIntroduction_ver1.8.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">more explanation of the core practice that he teaches<\/a> (if any of those links are broken, check out <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shinzen.org\/resources\/articles\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the top of this page<\/a> for working links). YouTube also features two channels containing\u00a0free videos\u00a0of his teaching (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/user\/ShinzenInterviews\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/user\/expandcontract\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>), and\u00a0he recently released\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Science-Enlightenment-How-Meditation-Works\/dp\/1591794609\/ref=pd_sbs_14_t_0\/156-6298866-1942210?_encoding=UTF8&amp;psc=1&amp;refRID=QQ8KG4T2030ATN8X8DGC\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">an excellent book<\/a>\u00a0containing\u00a0an extended investigation\u00a0into\u00a0his teaching.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2784\" src=\"https:\/\/intromeditation.com\/Wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/269002_500552473307937_760152909_n.jpg\" alt=\"269002_500552473307937_760152909_n\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/intromeditation.com\/Wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/269002_500552473307937_760152909_n.jpg 800w, https:\/\/intromeditation.com\/Wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/269002_500552473307937_760152909_n-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong>(14)<\/strong><\/span> One of my other main teachers, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.audiodharma.org\/speakers\/1\">Gil Fronsdal<\/a>, has free MP3 recordings of years of audio lectures online available for general download. \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.audiodharma.org\/series\/1\/talk\/1762\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Here<\/a> for example, are links to audio recordings of an\u00a0introduction to meditation class series. \u00a0I usually find his lectures to be inspirational, clarifying, deeply informed by traditional teachings, entertaining, and easy to listen to.<br \/>\n<!--\n<strong><span style=\"color: #993300;\">(10)<span style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\"><\/span>) <\/span><\/strong>And my eight week\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/intromeditation.com\/\">Intro to Meditation course<\/a> is, of course, is awesome, comprehensive, accessible, entertaining, spiritual, and for a perfectly tuned for beginner sitters.\u00a0 It is packed with information and techniques that I think are the best for a beginning meditator to learn and experience so as to feel grounded and open as they begin a sitting practice. --><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Over the years, people have often asked me for recommendations for Buddhist meditation resources for beginners.
